Slab or prehung: what’s the difference? A slab is the door alone, hung on new hinges in your existing frame. A prehung door arrives already hinged in its own frame (the jamb) and replaces the whole unit. A slab works when the old jamb is plumb and square; a prehung door is the fix when the frame is racked, damaged or the opening is new.
The panel style is your choice. These three details decide how the door feels every time you use it.
A slab is fitted to your existing jamb when the jamb is square and sound. Prehung door installation is the right call when the old frame is racked or the opening is new.
Hollow-core doors are light and inexpensive, and they sound like it. Solid-core doors cost more, close with a quiet thud and cut sound between bedrooms and baths.
Three hinges on solid doors, latches mortised flush, strikes adjusted so the door closes without slamming or rattling. Lever or knob, and passage, privacy or dummy function, named per door.
One visit to measure every opening, one fixed number, one to two days to hang the doors.

Call, text or book online with a rough count of doors and whether trim is included. We book a measurement within 48 hours and bring style samples.

A carpenter measures every opening, checks each jamb for square, confirms door style, core and hardware with you and hands you one written price.

Old doors and casings removed, new doors hung plumb with even reveals, hardware mortised and fitted, casings installed, filled and caulked.
Because the jamb is not plumb. A door hung in a jamb that leans will drift open or closed, rub at the top corner and never latch cleanly. Fitting a new slab into that jamb copies the problem. Shimming the jamb plumb, or replacing it with a pre-hung unit, fixes it for good.
When a jamb is split, swollen from a leak or racked out of square, we take out the whole frame and set a prehung unit in its place: shimmed plumb at every hinge, nailed through the shims and cased on both sides. Interior door frame replacement is done on the same visit. When only one side of a jamb is damaged, interior door jamb replacement on that side can save the casing on the other, and only the frames that need it are replaced.

Where we talk you out of it: slab doors in jambs that are out of square. A new slab in a bad jamb never closes right. We shim or replace the jamb first.
Most homes need a mix. We decide door by door at the measurement.
| Slab door installation | Prehung door installation | |
|---|---|---|
| Existing jamb | Plumb, square and undamaged | Racked, split, water-damaged, or a new opening |
| Casing | Usually stays in place | Comes off both sides and is replaced |
| Hinges and latch | Mortised to line up with the existing jamb | Already set in the new frame |
| Best for | A style upgrade or hollow to solid core in good frames | Doors that drift, rub or won’t latch |
New doors look unfinished under old casing. Door casing installation is part of every FIXO door quote: casings cut with tight miters, nailed to the jamb and the framing, filled and caulked. We handle door trim replacement on its own too, and the same carpenter can replace window casings, stools and aprons on the same visit, so the interior trim installation matches room to room.
For the trim at the floor and ceiling, see baseboard and crown molding installation.
Same styles, very different doors. Pick by the room.
Fine for closets and rooms where sound doesn’t matter.

Pocket doors slide into the wall, so the wall has to be opened to set the pocket frame and then patched and finished. We check the wall for wiring, pipes and ducts first, and pocket door installation is quoted on its own line.
Barn doors hang on a track mounted on the face of the wall, so barn door installation is quicker and the wall stays closed. We anchor the track into solid framing so a heavy door rolls true.

Interior door replacement cost starts with a slab swap in a sound jamb: HomeGuide puts that at $120 to $400 per door. A new prehung unit with casing costs more.
A slab if the existing jamb is plumb, square and undamaged. A prehung door if the frame is racked, split or the opening is new. We check each jamb at the measurement.
Yes, when they are plumb and square. We only replace the jambs that need it.
For bedrooms, baths and offices, yes. It blocks more sound and feels solid in the hand. Hollow core is fine for closets.
