Stairs are where people fall. These three details make them safe, and they’re what a building inspector measures. The numbers come from the International Residential Code (IRC), the base of the 2021 Virginia Residential Code.
Risers no taller than 7-3/4 inches, treads at least 10 inches deep, and no riser or tread more than 3/8 inch different from the rest of the flight (IRC R311.7.5). An uneven bottom step is the most common trip hazard we fix.
Stringers are cut from 2×12 lumber, hung at the top and anchored to the landing at the bottom, never left sitting on soil. Spacing follows the tread maker: Trex calls for 12 inches on center under most of its 1×6 composite stair treads, and 9 inches under Enhance.
A stair that lands on grass or gravel sinks, rots and moves. A poured pad or set pavers keep the bottom step at the right height for years.
One visit to measure the drop, one fixed number, and safe stairs in a day.

Call, text or book online with a rough number of steps and what’s wrong: wobble, rot, an uneven bottom step. We book a measurement within 48 hours.

A carpenter measures the total rise and run, checks the stringers and landing, confirms the tread material with you and hands you one written price.

Stringers cut and set, treads and risers fastened, handrail and guard installed, landing poured or set where needed.
If the stringers are solid, evenly cut and properly anchored, you only need to replace deck stair treads (and risers). If the stringers are soft where they meet the ground, notched too deep, or the steps are uneven, the whole staircase comes out. We probe the stringers and tell you which one you need.
| Replace treads and risers | Full deck stair replacement | |
|---|---|---|
| Stringers | Solid and evenly cut | Soft at the bottom, over-notched, or uneven |
| Steps | Within 3/8 inch of each other | Uneven bottom or top step |
| Landing | Firm and level | Sunk, heaved or missing |
Four measurements decide whether new treads are enough.

Where we talk you out of it: steep stairs forced into too short a run. If the geometry doesn’t fit, we show you the landing or turn that does.
A stair with four or more risers needs a graspable handrail 34 to 38 inches above the nosings (IRC R311.7.8). If the open side of the stair is more than 30 inches above the ground, it also needs a guard at least 34 inches high with openings under 4-3/8 inches, and the triangle at the bottom rail under 6 inches (IRC R312.1). Deck stair handrail installation is part of every FIXO staircase quote. For full deck rails, see deck railing installation.

Wood and composite porch steps get the same treatment as deck stairs: new stringers laid out to the real total rise, treads matched to the porch floor, a handrail where there are four or more risers, and a landing that won’t sink. Front porch steps replacement is usually a one-day job.
