Baseboard, crown and shoe molding: what’s the difference? Baseboard covers the joint where the wall meets the floor. Crown molding covers the joint where the wall meets the ceiling. Shoe molding or quarter round is the small strip nailed to the bottom of the baseboard to hide the expansion gap at the edge of the floor.
Trim is judged at the corners. These three details decide whether they stay tight.
Taller baseboards, 5 1/4 inches and up, suit rooms with 9-foot ceilings; 3 1/4 inches is the builder standard. Crown runs from 3 1/2 to 5 1/4 inches in most rooms, depending on ceiling height. We bring samples to the measurement.
Inside corners are coped so they stay closed as the house moves through the seasons. Outside corners are mitered and glued. Long runs are scarfed over a stud.
Finish nails go into studs and plates, not just drywall. Every hole is filled and every seam caulked so the paint reads as one surface.
New flooring is the best time for baseboard replacement. The old base was cut to the old floor height, it often carries years of scuffs and caulk lines, and a new floor sits higher or lower than the one it replaced. FIXO installs floors too, so baseboard installation, shoe molding and quarter round happen on the same visit, at one fixed price.
See our flooring installation service if the floors are next.
Every quote names the material, because it decides how the trim takes paint, nails and humidity.
| Material | Best for | Finish | Our note |
|---|---|---|---|
| MDF | Painted baseboards and crown in dry rooms | Paint | Dead-flat finish, no grain showing through |
| Finger-jointed pine | Long painted runs | Paint | Holds nails well on uneven walls |
| Poplar | Painted trim that takes knocks | Paint | Harder than pine, still smooth under paint |
| Oak or maple | Stained trim to match wood floors or doors | Stain or clear coat | Costs more; filler and caulk show through a clear finish |
One visit to measure every run, one fixed number, one to two days to install.

Call, text or book online with the rooms and whether it is baseboards, crown or both. We book a measurement within 48 hours and bring profile samples.

A carpenter measures every wall, checks floor and ceiling flatness, confirms profiles with you and hands you one written price.

Old trim removed and hauled away, walls patched where needed, new trim coped, scribed, nailed, filled and caulked, ready for paint.
Because it was mitered and nailed into drywall. Wood moves with humidity, a 45-degree miter opens as it does, and a nail with nothing behind it lets the whole piece drift. Coped joints and stud nailing fix both, and cost nothing extra when the carpenter knows how.
Five things decide whether the corners stay tight, and we check all of them before you get a price.

After, and ideally on the same visit. New baseboards cover the expansion gap and avoid a visible line where the old trim used to sit.
Usually. We bring samples and match or source the nearest stock profile. Custom profiles are quoted when nothing stock comes close.
MDF gives a dead-flat painted finish and resists warping. Wood takes nails better on uneven walls and can be stained. We recommend by room.
A coped joint overlaps the next piece, so it stays closed when the wood shrinks in winter. A mitered inside corner opens into a gap.
Yes. Both are nailed to the baseboard, not the floor, so floating floors can still expand and contract.
Yes, as its own line, or we leave it filled, caulked and primed for your painter. Painted-only jobs are on our trim painting page.
