Residential Interior Painting Done Right: Prep, Primer and Two Coats

The color is the last decision. These three specs are what you are actually paying for, and they are what separate residential interior painting that still looks sharp in ten years from a paint job that flashes and scuffs in one.

01

Prep: Patch, Sand, Caulk

Nail pops and dents patched, patches sanded flush, cracks at trim and ceiling caulked, glossy surfaces scuffed. Skipping any of it shows the first time the sun hits the wall.

02

Primer: On Patches and Color Changes

Every patch gets primer so it does not flash through the finish. Dark-to-light and light-to-dark color changes get a tinted primer coat so two finish coats actually cover.

03

Two Finish Coats, Cut by Hand

Two full coats of a washable interior finish, rolled wet-on-wet with edges cut in by brush, not taped. One coat is what a cheap quote means by painted.

What Interior Residential Painting Involves, Room by Room

Interior residential painting is mostly preparation and sequence: what gets patched, what gets primed and which surface is painted first. Get those right and two coats of a good paint look crisp for years. Get them wrong and even the best paint on the market flashes over patches, drips onto finished trim or peels at the corners.

The Order We Paint Every Room

Each room is cleared or covered, floors masked and switch plates removed. Walls and ceilings are patched, sanded and spot-primed, and trim is caulked and scuffed. Ceilings go first, so any spatter lands on walls that have not been painted yet. Walls are then cut in by brush and rolled in two coats, and doors and trim go last in a hard enamel, brushed or sprayed. Plates go back, floors are uncovered, and the room is cleaned and returned before the crew moves on.

How Much Does Interior House Painting Cost in Northern Virginia, MD and DC?

Short answer: in 2026, painting a single bedroom in the DC metro area typically costs $530 to $1,000 with the walls, ceiling, baseboard and a door included. For a whole 2,000 sq ft home, published regional pricing puts walls only at about $4,000 to $7,000, and walls, ceilings, doors and trim at about $9,400 to $13,500. 3,000 sq ft$6,000 – $10,500$14,100 – $20,250

Ranges use 2026 published per-square-foot pricing for interior painting. Recent Virginia cost data puts whole-house interior jobs in Arlington and Alexandria at roughly $4,500 to $4,800 on average. The cost to paint a 1,500 sq ft house interior lands near $3,000 to $5,250 for walls alone.

Interior Painting Cost Per Sq Ft

Painters quote per square foot in two different ways, which is why the numbers you find online rarely match. Priced on the home’s floor area, walls alone run about $2 to $3.50 per sq ft, and a full repaint with ceilings, doors and trim about $4.70 to $6.75. Priced on the painted surface, Washington, DC figures run about $1.50 to $3.50 per sq ft of wall, $2 to $4 per sq ft of smooth ceiling and $2 to $6 per linear foot of baseboard and trim. Ask which method a quote uses before you compare two of them.

Interior Ceiling Paint and Colors for Ceilings

Most ceilings in the DC area are painted in a flat or matte ceiling white, and for good reason: a flat interior ceiling paint hides seams, patches and roller marks that any sheen would show under a ceiling light. We roll ceilings first in every room, in two coats, in a finish that is easy to touch up later. Kitchen and bathroom ceilings get a mildew-resistant finish instead of standard flat.

White is not the only option. The colors for ceilings we suggest most often:

  • Ceiling white or bright white: the default for 8 ft ceilings, because it makes a room feel taller and bounces the most light.
  • A lighter tint of the wall color: softens the line where wall meets ceiling, which suits bedrooms and rooms with crown molding.
  • A warm off-white: sits better than a stark white next to beige, greige and other warm wall colors.
  • A deliberate darker color: works in dining rooms, powder rooms and rooms with 9 ft or taller ceilings, where it makes the space feel cozy rather than low.

If a ceiling needs more than paint, such as water stains, cracks or peeling, see our guide to painting a ceiling. If the rest of the house is fine, a walls and ceilings color refresh may be all you need.

How Long Does Interior House Painting Take?

A typical three- or four-bedroom home takes about a week with one FIXO crew working room by room. A single room usually takes a day, while larger homes, tall foyers or heavy wall repairs add days, which we agree with you before work starts. You never have to move out: each room is back in use the same evening.

Working dayWhat happens
Day 1Furniture moved and covered, floors and fixtures protected, plates removed, repairs patched
Day 2Patches sanded and primed, color-change walls primed, ceilings painted in two coats
Days 3–4Walls cut in by brush and rolled in two coats, room by room
Day 5Doors and trim enameled, plates and furniture put back, rooms cleaned
Days 6–7Final walkthrough with you and touch-ups

Low-VOC wall paint is dry to the touch within hours but keeps curing for several weeks, so wait before scrubbing fresh walls.
