Silver Spring is unincorporated, so Montgomery County handles permits and inspections, and it is large enough to hold several eras of housing at once. Closest to downtown, Woodside Park and East Silver Spring have 1920s and 1930s colonials, craftsman bungalows and brick foursquares with full basements and board subfloors. Four Corners, Montgomery Knolls, Woodmoor and Indian Spring filled in during the 1940s and 1950s with brick Cape Cods and ramblers, many of them on slab or with partially finished lower levels.
