A railing is a safety system that happens to look nice. These are the numbers a building inspector checks. They come from the International Residential Code (IRC), which the 2021 Virginia Residential Code and Maryland’s county codes are built on.
A deck or porch more than 30 inches above the ground needs a guard at least 36 inches tall, measured from the deck surface (IRC R312.1). Guards along a stair can be 34 inches, measured from the stair nosings. The 42-inch figure you’ll see online is the commercial building code, not a house.
No opening in the guard may let a 4-inch sphere pass, including the gap under the bottom rail. On the open side of a stair the limit is 4-3/8 inches, and the triangle formed by the tread, riser and bottom rail can be up to 6 inches (IRC R312.1.3). Wide-spaced decorative balusters fail this.
The code designs guards for a single 200-pound load at the top rail (IRC Table R301.5). That takes through-bolts into blocked joists, not screws into the rim joist.
One visit to measure the frame, one fixed number, and new rails in a day.

Call, text or book online with a rough length of railing and the look you want. We book a measurement within 48 hours.

A carpenter measures every run, pushes on every post, checks the rim joist, shows you system samples and hands you one written price.

Old rails come off and are hauled away. Posts are anchored or replaced. New rail sections, balusters or cables, and caps go on level and tight.
Deck railing repair fixes a solid system with a few loose or broken parts. Deck railing replacement swaps the whole system when it is rotted, dated or below code. New deck railing installation adds a guard where there wasn’t one, or a new style on sound posts. We tell you which one your deck needs after we push on every post.
| Repair | Replacement | New installation | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fits when | A loose post, a few broken balusters or a cracked cap on a sound system | Rails rotting, wobbling everywhere or under 36 inches | A deck or porch with no guard, or a new style on solid posts |
| Posts | Re-bolted or blocked | Checked, re-bolted or replaced | New posts bolted into blocked joists |
| Often called | Deck railing repair, porch railing repair | Wood deck railing replacement, porch railing replacement | Porch railing installation, deck railing installation |
The rail is only as solid as the post under it. These four checks decide repair or replace.

Where we talk you out of it: new rails on posts that are rotten at the base. The post is the rail. We replace it, or we don’t do the job.
Short answer: deck railing replacement cost runs about $50 to $250 per linear foot installed, according to Fixr, depending on the system. Aluminum averages about $80 per linear foot installed (HomeAdvisor). At that rate, 40 feet of aluminum railing comes to roughly $3,200. Replacing only part of a railing (about a quarter to a third) runs $400 to $500, per HomeGuide.

| Railing job | Typical national price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Deck railing replacement, all systems | $50 – $250 per linear ft | Fixr |
| Aluminum deck railing installation | About $80 per linear ft installed | HomeAdvisor |
| Wood railing | $40 – $50 per linear ft (materials) | HomeAdvisor |
| Partial railing repair (25–30% of rails) | $400 – $500 | HomeGuide |

Cable deck railing cost has the widest range: $50 to $200 per linear foot, depending on post material and design (HomeAdvisor). Stainless posts and corners sit at the top of that range.
Four good systems. Pick by maintenance, look and budget.
Wide-spaced balusters, horizontal “ladder” infill a child can climb, and guards under 36 inches.

| System | Upkeep | Look | Typical price (national) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Paint or stain every few years | Matches a wood deck | $40 – $50 per linear ft, materials (HomeAdvisor) |
| Aluminum | None: powder-coated | Slim posts, black, white or bronze | About $80 per linear ft installed (HomeAdvisor) |
| Composite | Wash only | Matches a Trex or composite deck | $15 – $30 per linear ft, materials (HomeAdvisor) |
| Cable | Re-tension now and then | Open view | $50 – $200 per linear ft (HomeAdvisor) |
Aluminum is the workhorse: no painting, no rot, and posts that mount to the frame with structural brackets. Black, white, bronze and textured finishes are available in most systems, and samples come to the measurement.
Cable gives you the view, but it is the least forgiving system to install. End and corner posts carry the cable tension, so they need solid blocking in the frame. The cables are tensioned to the maker’s spec and checked so a 4-inch sphere can’t pass.
A stair with four or more risers needs a graspable handrail 34 to 38 inches above the stair nosings (IRC R311.7.8). That’s separate from the guard. A wide, flat 2×6 cap doesn’t count, because a hand can’t wrap around it. Deck handrail installation is quoted on the same visit as the rails. If the stairs themselves are uneven or soft, see deck stair replacement.
