Wear Layer, Measured in Mils
The clear top film that takes scratches and scuffs. Roughly 12 mil suits bedrooms and light traffic.

Core Type, SPC or WPC
SPC is dense and thin, so it resists dents and telegraphs less of an uneven subfloor. WPC is thicker and softer, so it feels warmer and quieter but dents more easily under a refrigerator leg.

Overall Thickness in Millimeters

The plank is. The installed floor is a different question, and any installer who says otherwise is overselling. A rigid core plank will not swell, warp or delaminate when it gets wet.

Luxury vinyl plank flooring, usually shortened to LVP, is a rigid core vinyl board made in long planks that imitate wood. Under the printed wood look film sits a dense waterproof core, and on top sits a clear wear layer that absorbs the abuse. Most planks we install have a pad attached underneath, which makes it quieter and warmer underfoot than tile. If you want real wood on the surface, engineered hardwood is the other floor we install for that look.

Over ceramic tile, sheet vinyl, hardwood and concrete that is flat within roughly 3/16 inch over 10 feet, yes, and skipping removal saves you money. Over carpet, cushioned vinyl or an existing floating floor, no.
Yes, over a vapor barrier underlayment, which we include as standard below grade. It is the floor we put in our own basements. If the slab tests high for moisture we say so before you sign, because no waterproof plank survives a slab that is actively wicking.
Around 12 mil is fine for bedrooms and light traffic. 20 mil and up is what we recommend with dogs, kids or a heavily used kitchen. Wear layer is the best single predictor of how long the floor keeps looking new.
