Interior Wall Painting Done Right: Patching, Coverage and Finish

A fast job is still a proper job. These three specs are what separate interior wall painting that looks even under any light from a quick coat that flashes over every patch.

01

Patching: Nail Pops and Dents

Every nail pop, picture hook hole and dent is filled, sanded flush and spot-primed before paint. Unprimed patches flash through the finish the moment the light hits them.

02

Coverage: Two Coats, Tinted Primer on Big Changes

Two full coats of finish, with a tinted primer first when going from dark to light or light to deep color. Two coats over a dark wall without primer is three coats by the time it covers.

03

Finish: Flat Ceilings, Washable Walls

Flat or matte on ceilings to hide seams, eggshell or satin on walls so they wipe clean. Cut in by brush along trim and ceiling, rolled wet-on-wet so there are no lap marks.

When a Walls and Ceilings Color Refresh Is the Right Call

When the trim is fine and the walls are tired. A walls-and-ceilings refresh skips doors and trim entirely, which is where most of the labor in a full paint job lives, so you get the color change at a fraction of the cost and the room back the same day. It is the right call before listing a home, after moving in, or when a nursery or home office needs a new color fast.

What a Color Refresh Actually Involves

Furniture is pulled to the center and covered, floors are masked along the baseboards and plates come off. Walls and ceilings are patched, sanded and spot-primed. The ceiling is cut in and rolled first, then walls are cut in by brush along the trim and ceiling and rolled in two coats. Plates go back, masking comes off and the furniture is returned.

Your price at measurementFixed · all-in

Where we talk you out of it: rooms where the trim is yellowed or chipped. New wall color next to tired trim makes the trim look worse. There we suggest adding trim painting to the same visit.

Ceiling Paint Color and the Best Paint for Ceilings

Ceilings are half of every color refresh, and ceiling paint color is the question homeowners ask us about most. Here is what our ceiling painting services use, and why.

What Is the Best Ceiling Paint?

For most ceilings, the best paint is a dedicated flat or ultra-flat interior ceiling paint, not leftover wall paint. The two we use most:

  • Sherwin-Williams Premium Ceiling Paint: the best ceiling paint Sherwin-Williams makes for homes. It is self-priming with one-coat coverage and resists spatter and mildew.
  • Benjamin Moore Waterborne Ceiling Paint: an ultra-flat, low-VOC finish that minimizes spatter and lap marks, adds a mildew-resistant coating and can be tinted to any Benjamin Moore color.

Ceiling vs Wall Paint

Ceiling paint is thicker (higher viscosity), so it drips and spatters less overhead, and it dries to a dead-flat finish that hides seams, patches and roller marks under a ceiling light. Wall paint is thinner and comes in washable sheens like eggshell and satin that you can wipe a fingerprint off. That is why we roll ceilings in ceiling paint and walls in a washable wall finish, never one product for both. Our paint sheen guide covers which sheen goes in each room.

Paint Colors for Ceiling Beyond White

Colors for ceilings do not have to be white. The best ceiling color for most rooms is still white or a lighter version of the wall color, but these work well too:

  • A lighter tint of the wall color: softens the line where wall meets ceiling, good in bedrooms and rooms with crown molding.
  • Light grey ceiling paint: choose a gray clearly lighter than the walls, so the ceiling reads as a soft lid rather than a low one.
  • Off white ceiling paint: warmer than ceiling white, it keeps cream and beige rooms from looking cold.
  • Blue or a deeper color: a classic for porches and nurseries, and a statement in dining rooms, powder rooms and rooms with 9 ft or taller ceilings.

Bathroom Ceilings

Steam is what peels bathroom ceilings. The right bathroom ceiling white paint is one with a mildew-resistant coating, such as Benjamin Moore Aura Bath & Spa in matte, or Waterborne Ceiling Paint, which Benjamin Moore lists for bathroom ceilings. If a ceiling already has water stains, cracks or peeling, our guide to painting a ceiling explains the fix before the paint.

How Long Does It Take to Paint a Room?

Most rooms take one day: walls and ceiling patched, primed where needed and finished in two coats, with the room put back before we leave. A big color change that needs a tinted primer coat, a two-story foyer or heavy repairs can add a day, which we agree with you before work starts.

Time of dayWhat happens
MorningFurniture pulled to the center and covered, floors masked, plates removed, nail pops and dents patched
Late morningPatches sanded and spot-primed, ceiling cut in and rolled in two coats
AfternoonWalls cut in by brush along trim and ceiling, rolled in two coats wet-on-wet
End of dayPlates back, masking off, furniture returned, walkthrough with you

Low-VOC wall paint is dry to the touch within an hour or two but keeps curing for several weeks, so wait before scrubbing fresh walls.

In the DC area, painting the walls of a typical 10 x 10 ft bedroom in two coats costs about $280 to $330, or $390 to $470 with the ceiling. A 12 x 15 ft living room runs about $480 to $550 for walls and ceiling. FIXO gives you one fixed written price per room after a free measurement.

A standard 8 ft bedroom ceiling costs about $110 to $140 for two coats, and a 12 x 15 ft living room ceiling about $170 to $190. Priced by area, smooth ceilings in the DC area run about $2 to $4 per square foot. Tall, vaulted or tray ceilings cost more.

A dedicated flat or ultra-flat ceiling paint. We use Sherwin-Williams Premium Ceiling Paint, which is self-priming and spatter- and mildew-resistant, and Benjamin Moore Waterborne Ceiling Paint, an ultra-flat, low-VOC finish that can be tinted to any color.

Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace is the safest bright white for most rooms. Sherwin-Williams High Reflective White is brighter still for dark rooms, Extra White and Pure White suit crisp or soft looks, and White Dove or Alabaster are warm off-whites for beige and wood-tone rooms.

You can, but it is thinner, drips and spatters more overhead and comes in sheens that show seams and roller marks. Ceiling paint is thicker and dead flat, so we use it on every ceiling and a washable wall paint on the walls.

Usually not. White or a lighter tint of the wall color keeps the room bright and the ceiling feeling high. Painting walls and ceiling one color works in rooms with tall ceilings when you want a cozy, enveloping look.
