What is accent wall installation? An accent wall is one wall finished differently from the rest of the room. A carpentry accent wall adds real material to that wall: wood slats, battens, shiplap boards or wainscoting panels, fastened into the studs, then filled, caulked and painted or clear-coated. It reads as part of the house, not as decoration hung on it.
The style is your choice. These three details decide whether the wall looks built-in or stuck on.
Slat spacing and batten bays are worked out from the real width of your wall, so you never end with a sliver at the corner. Outlets, switches and windows are planned into the pattern, not cut around afterwards.
Primed pine and poplar for painted battens, MDF for dead-flat painted panels, and oak or walnut slats for a natural wood finish. The material is named on every quote.
Nail holes are filled and sanded, every seam is caulked, then the wall is primed and painted in the sheen you pick, or clear-coated for natural wood.
Four styles we build every week. Pick by the room, the light and how much texture you want.
The modern vertical slat wall is the most requested accent wall across Northern Virginia, Maryland and DC. Oak, walnut or stained poplar slats are set over a dark or acoustic felt backer at an even gap, then clear-coated so the grain stays visible. A wood slat accent wall works best behind a bed, a TV or along a stair wall.
Flat battens fastened to the wall in a grid or in vertical lines, then painted to match or contrast the room. Board and batten installation suits bedrooms, entries and dining rooms, and a board and batten accent wall is the quickest way to give a plain builder wall real shadow lines.

The same wall can call for a different style depending on what happens in the room.
One visit to measure the wall, one fixed number, one day to build it.

Call, text or book online with the room, a rough wall width and a photo of the style you like. We book a measurement within 48 hours.

A carpenter measures the wall, maps outlets and windows, confirms material and spacing with samples and hands you one written price.

Wall prepped, layout marked, pieces cut on site and fastened, filled and caulked. Paint follows on a second short visit if we are finishing it.
Almost always the layout. A wall that is 142 inches wide does not divide evenly by a 4-inch batten and a 16-inch bay, and a sliver at the corner reads as a mistake from across the room. The second reason is a wall that is not flat. A carpenter checks it with a straightedge, then shims and scribes so every board sits tight.
Five things decide the layout, and we check all of them before you get a price.

Where we talk you out of it: covering a wall that has active moisture or cracking plaster. The wall gets fixed first, or the new accent wall will show the problem within a year.
Short answer: HomeGuide puts shiplap installation cost at $3 to $11 per square foot, or $240 to $1,700 for one accent wall of 80 to 150 square feet. The cost to install wainscoting runs $10 to $40 per square foot, with board and batten at $10 to $23. Natural oak or walnut slat walls cost more in material than painted styles.

Most walls are built in one day. Painting is a second short visit so the caulk and filler can cure first.
Yes. We add blocking behind the slats for the mount and route the cables inside the wall so nothing shows.
They are brought forward flush with the new surface using box extenders, so the cover plates sit flat.
MDF gives the flattest painted finish. Primed pine or poplar holds nails better on uneven walls. Oak or walnut is for natural wood slats. We recommend by room.
For wainscoting installation, a common starting point is about one third of the wall height. Taller panels suit rooms with 9-foot ceilings. We mark the height on your wall before we build.
Yes. Shiplap works on powder room walls and on ceilings. For a full bath with a shower we talk through the board material at the measurement.
Yes, as its own line. Or we leave it filled, caulked and primed for your painter.
