Rise and Run: Even, Every Step
Risers between 4 and 7.75 inches, treads at least 10 inches deep, and no step more than 3/8 inch different from the next. An uneven bottom step is the most common trip hazard we fix.

Stringers: 2x12, Properly Supported
Cut stringers from 2×12 lumber, spaced for the tread material, attached with hangers at the top and anchored to the landing at the bottom, not resting on soil.

Landing: Concrete Pad or Pavers

If the stringers are solid, evenly cut and properly anchored, new treads and risers are enough. If the stringers are soft where they meet the ground, notched too deep, or the steps are uneven, the whole staircase comes out. We probe them and tell you which.

Sound stringers stay; soft or badly cut ones are replaced with new 2×12 stringers laid out from the actual deck height to the actual landing. The landing is poured or re-set if it has sunk.
